Dr Amos is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Japanese Studies, National University of Singapore. He received his PhD in East Asian History from ANU, MA in Japanese History from Tohoku University, M.Ed. in Japanese History from Akita University and BA in Modern Asian Studies from Griffith University. His research primarily focuses on questions of human rights, marginality, alterity, and social stratification in Japan from the early modern period through to the present, with a particular focus on historic outcaste communities. He has just completed a monograph entitled Embodying Difference:The Making of Burakumin in Modern Japan (released in two editions: University of Hawai’i Press, 2011 / Navayana, 2011) which explores the problem of outcaste identity in Japan. |
