A/Prof Marranci has commenced a one-year appointment as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in the Religion and Globalisation Cluster with effect from 23 September 2008.
He is an anthropologist by training, working on religion with a specialisation in Muslim societies. His main research interests concern identity, Muslim migration/immigration, urban sociology, globalization, fundamentalism, political Islam, secularisation processes, criminology and anthropology of music. He has widely published in these subjects. His forthcoming book focuses on current and former Muslim prisoners and their religious identity.
A/Prof Marranci has successfully started, as founding editor, the first anthropological journal of Islamic Studies, Contemporary Islam: Dynamics of Muslim Life, which is published by the international publisher Springer. The journal, which focuses on different aspects of Muslim societies, has a multidisciplinary editorial board.
Recently, he has established (with Prof. Bryan Turner) a new book series entitled Muslims in Global Societies which is also published by Springer. These editorial activities have provided an opportunity to form academic networks with colleagues in major universities located in America, Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
His last research, from 2003 to 2008, was funded by The Carnegie Trust (2003-2004), The University of Aberdeen and The British Academy (2004-2007) and it has focused on identity, religion and ideology among current and former Muslim prisoners and Muslim youth culture in the UK.
