Prof Prasenjit Duara joined ARI as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow (Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster) from 2-28 August 2006. He is currently Professor and Chair of the History Department at the University of Chicago. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1983 and works on the modern social and cultural history of China, the Japanese empire, and nationalism and de-colonization in Asia. He is the author of Culture, Power and the State: Rural North China, 1900-1942 (1988, 1990), Rescuing History from the Nation: Questioning Narratives of Modern China (1995, 1996), Sovereignty and Authenticity: Manchukuo and the East Asian Modern (2003, 2004) and a reader on Decolonization (Routledge, 2003). During his stay in Singapore, he conducted research on two projects: "Religion and Citizenship in East Asia" and "Hong Kong during the Cold War" (1950s).
